The district attorney of Manhattan, N.Y., is trying to make a criminal case stick against Donald Trump.
DA Alvin Bragg is pushing to have the former president indicted on charges that he falsified business records during his payoff of his alleged former mistress Stormy Daniels. This is normally a misdemeanor charge, The Wall Street Journal reported, but Bragg is trying to make it into a felony, saying that it hid campaign contributions.
Meanwhile, House Republicans say President Joe Biden and his family received $1.3 million from business associates linked to China. The Biden administration told USA Today that these are hyper-partisan attacks.
No matter what level of truth lies in either case, they are both politically motivated, and they threaten to further divide our country.
We have the leaders of China and Russia holding meetings in the wake of things going badly for Vladimir Putin in the war in Ukraine. We have banks collapsing and threatening our entire economic system. We have housing at impossible highs across the nation and we are dealing with inflation.
We have some pretty big problems right now, and whether Trump – who is not even president any more, mind you – lied about his mistress payoff or not, who cares? How does that advance the United States of America?
It’s as if forces are trying to find a technicality to make Trump ineligible to run again in 2024, as if that will not galvanize his most ardent supporters anyway.
This is a weak attempt at interfering with future democratic elections. If you have a real crime that Trump has committed, let’s hear it. But do not waste American taxpayers’ resources on a misdemeanor, while our current administration brushes off a large windfall from our sworn enemy as rhetoric.
Then you add the X-factor of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis having to be the one to sign the extradition for Trump to New York, further muddying the waters between good governance and political backstabbing. Would DeSantis benefit more from sending Trump home, or by not doing so? And who in our country benefits from either choice?
As Americans, we deserve better than this. We need to be united in our cause to keep our country safe and moving forward. We need to push for a stable economy and good schools. We need to promote free enterprise and the expansion of democracy.
The rest of this hogwash is just clouding the real issues and dividing us further.
