Summer is here in force, and even with gas prices through the roof, folks are going to be traveling around to get where they are going for work and play.
We need to be extra careful out there this summer. This is really the first full summer when we are not limiting events and activities because of COVID-19, and traffic levels should be at or above what we used to think of as normal three summers ago.
We have students out driving on the road, both young students working summer jobs and graduates getting ready to go off to college. We have an influx of tourists who are here to enjoy our beautiful community and all it has to offer in the summertime. Plus, we have all our regular traffic.
It’s going to be busy out there. Frankly, it already is. And it would be beneficial to our entire community and guests if we can watch ourselves out on the road.
Highway 365 has maintained its reputation as one of the most dangerous local roads, and it will continue to be so as long as we have impaired and distracted drivers.
We owe it to our residents and visitors to be as careful as we can be. The folks who need to hear this the most may not get the message, but driving under the influence or running from police on our roadways provide dangerous avenues to innocent people being hurt or killed.
We live in a geographically blessed region and folks want to visit. Thank goodness, the season is here and tourists are pouring in to ring the cash registers of our local merchants. As we take an extra second or two to look twice before proceeding through an intersection, let’s remember our guests who are not as familiar with our roads. Let’s also remember the money they spend locally helps offset the tax load on us.
Let’s spend this summer respecting and taking care of each other, on the roadways and everywhere.
Onward and upward.
