The shrinking space in the landfill is one problem our community is facing, but we face a trash problem all over Habersham County. It’s called litter. And this time of the year, when the vegetation on the sides of our roads is dead is when our litter problem is most visible.
When is the last time you have taken a ride in the passenger seat to a destination in our community? If it has been a while, ask your spouse or a friend to drive on the next outing. Then while riding take a good look on the sides of our roads, around stop signs and exits along Georgia Highway 365. Buckle up, because it is a lot to take in.

Litter is the most illogical problem in our community. It does not take money, or resources, or a public action to stop litter. All it takes is respect for one’s own community.
We’re not saying you are the one littering. However, in any issue you have two choices: you can be a part of the solution or you're part of the problem. Because this is our community’s problem.
Many groups in Habersham County adopt roads to patrol and pick-up litter. We applaud them for their efforts. Some roads in our community do look better than others.
Let’s start by opening our eyes while traveling around locally. And when you can, sit in the passenger seat. Then let’s start the conversation and collectively solve the problem.
