Cut down on plastic

To the editor:

Among the solutions being considered to alleviate the landfill issues, it seems that reducing the amount that is delivered would be the foremost issue to tackle.

A suggestion – encourage stores to have a “plastic free” aisle. Shampoo and conditioners are available in bar form. Laundry soap can come in cardboard boxes, add a sheet to the laundry (they work great). The same for various liquid cleaners – they are available in beeswax containers that can be composted in the yard.

Reusable ziplock bags can be purchased in various sizes. One grocery store in Gainesville has a recycling program for styrofoam. They used to take just trays but have enlarged the program to include cups, take out containers and more. Our local store has plastic containers (No. 2) that are recyclable and others that are not. Maybe they are not aware that No. 5 goes nowhere but the garbage can, then to the landfill.
