Questions about school tax for seniors

To the editor: I have a question: Why are seniors in our county penalized on property taxes because they need to work to help curb the effects of this high inflation we are all dealing with? I am sure you have noticed the age of some of the employees at Ingles, Lowes and Walmart, just to name a few.

They are fairly senior and I am sure they are not there because they love the work, although maybe some are. By penalized, I mean that the age 65 exemption available in the county on the school tax portion of the property taxes is not available if you make over $1,000 per month, excluding Social Security and certain retirement incomes. Why make it harder for folks on a fixed income to make ends meet? They get zero benefit from the school system, so why have limitations on the exclusion?

Maybe someone can enlighten me on this issue. I, for one, believe it needs to be changed.

Always grateful,
