Rabun does recycling well

To the editor:

Last week, I read a letter to the newspaper by Valerie Dye and I must say I absolutely agree with her. She was responding to an article about recycling in Habersham County.

The article seemed to blame the residents of Habersham County for the poor turnout in recycling. First of all, the article said our current landfill was going to be full in two years and it was going to take 8-10 years to make a new landfill.

I understand it will take time to find a location, secure ownership, and dig a new landfill. But 8-10 years? I find that a little hard to believe. And as Ms. Dye stated, the current condition of the recycling facilities in our county are less than user friendly. I suggest the County Commission take a look at our neighbors to the north. Rabun County has an excellent recycling system that is very user friendly.

If we modeled our centers more like theirs maybe that would help encourage more citizens to recycle here.

Another thing that would help our landfills from filling up so soon is if Habersham County would recycle more items than they currently do. Two that come to mind are non-aluminum metal cans and styrofoam.

I hope our County Commission will take a long hard look at this problem and vote to come into the 21st Century.
