America starts with each of us

Today,  the casting of votes is behind us.

This comes with a large sigh of relief from many folks, because at minimum, we are done with the campaign rhetoric at every turn. Except of course for the Jan. 5 Senate runoff, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Let’s enjoy the moment to take a breath.

There are many Americans who believe the sentiment, no matter who our next president is, we all need to come together and unify. There is another subset of Americans who are buying up ammunition in case there is civil unrest in the coming weeks.

Folks, this is a crazy world. However, fortunately we have chosen to live in a community that keeps us somewhat insulated from the insanity that exist outside our county lines and especially outside the boundaries of the great state of Georgia. Unfortunately, what happens outside Habersham County still impacts us.

Speaking on elections, Will Rodgers once said, “Every time we have an election, we get in worse men and the country keeps right on going. Times have proven only one thing and that is you just can’t ruin this country even with politics.” Will, a newspaper columnist, actor and comedian drew his last breath 85 years ago. Though times have changed greatly, Will was a member of the Cherokee nation, a group of people whose lifestyle was basically destroyed by the federal government.

No matter the outcome of the 2020 presidential election, close to half the people who pull the lever will be disappointed in the final outcome. Nevertheless, we must pick up and move forward and realize we’re blessed by living in the greatest country the world has ever known.

Let’s not stop speaking to friends because they stand up for what they believe in. Instead let’s pledge to listen and then have a healthy discussion.

We cannot afford to accept these current actions in national politics as normal. We have to demand better of our government and ourselves. We have to look in the mirror and say we are going to do better as Americans.

So, it starts today, whether your candidates won or lost. America has to pull back together, and that’s on each and every one of us.

Here’s to sticking to the Constitution as the guiding document to run our country.

Onward and upward.
