Thanks from senior community

To the Editor:

Today I am thankful for the Habersham County Senior Center. The staff and volunteers served a Thanksgiving meal to a full house. The food was delicious but most rewarding was the feeling of community.

The center offers something for every senior. They address the physical and emotional needs of the senior community. Thanks to all who have a part in the success of this service.

My retort,

To the Editor:

As an avid letter writer, nothing gets my attention any quicker than someone misrepresenting my letter. On Oct. 20, a letter of mine (The Saga of my MAGA cap) ran in this paper.  In it I specifically addressed a group of violent radical anti- Trump protesters including those offended by a MAGA cap. In response, Betsy Dye accused me of “indiscriminately grouping her with these people”.  If there is any agreement among my readers it is that I write plainly.  I reread my leader several times thinking that I had missed something. I could not find even a hint that I  had “indiscriminately grouped”  Ms. Dye  with “these people.” Now Ms. Dye, I will address you personally. I am mindful that at the time you wrote your letter,  you were apparently angry.  That is immaterial to me. I would request that you write another response  and point out where I did what you claim, not just for my information but for the benefit  of other readers.  I have never criticized anyone for merely not supporting Donald Trump. I have valued friends who do not. If you cannot point out your claim Ms. Dye,  it would seem  logical  to me,  if you are a person of character,  to print a retraction. In another part of your letter you suggest that I am a redneck with a low IQ, low income  and extreme  pride in my southern heritage. You could be right on all counts. You also seem to suggest that I may be a quality human being. Since you know no more about me than I do about you, this suggestion is, at best, uninformed.  My position about compromising with the subjects of my letter is stated plainly.  Regardless of what you wish in your naive way,  the line between “us” and “those people” has been clearly drawn. The prospect of “intelligent discourse” is dim indeed. Just my opinion.
