Activity is heating up for the Habersham Central football program. The Raiders were back in the weight room early this week and took the field for spring practice beginning Wednesday.
While the updated roster is flush with guys returning from the 2022 squad, Habersham still faces urgency to fill in some gaps following key departures.
“The thing about last year’s senior class,” Raiders coach Benji Harrison said, “is most of those guys were huge contributors on Friday nights.”
Nonetheless, Harrison expressed excitement towards a spring in which he plans to separate the wheat from the chaff. “To me that’s what Spring practice is all about…figuring out who wants to play and who we’ll be able to count on heading into the fall.”
If one thing’s for certain, Harrison said, it’s that the Raiders won’t be lacking experience this year. “We’ve got a really big group of rising seniors and overall just a bunch of guys back who saw a lot of snaps last year.”
Still, Harrison admits, his team has much to address this offseason. “Our guys know we need a strong offseason,” he says. “They’ve done a great job so far. We’re addressing a lot of issues we seemed to have at the end of last season.”
Habersham Central will get an opportunity to measure its progress on Friday, May 19, when the Raiders travel to Hart County for a Spring scrimmage.
