The new home field for Habersham Central Baseball is already paying dividends. Despite the rainiest week the county has seen in recent memory, Raider baseball camp took place this week without any major disruptions.
“Even with the weather we had a really good week,” Raiders baseball coach Chris Akridge. “We really only had one day where we were stuck inside for a bit (due to lightning) so obviously the turf has helped a ton.”
Raider Park’s state-of-the-art field can drain 12 inches of rain per hour, meaning campers and coaches were able to do everything they’d normally do regardless of how sloppy conditions got during the four-day camp.
Campers ages 4-10 were divided into several groups to ensure a high camper-to-coach ratio. The youngest future Raiders partake in four action-packed days of fundamentals sessions, drills, contests, scrimmages and games. Several former Raiders and current varsity players were on hand to serve as counselors.
Later in the day, camp shifted focus to older campers aged 11-14. This more advanced portion featured more intense training sessions to help each player grow in all phases of the game. Campers were coached up on situational hitting, team defensive situations, baserunning and more. They’re also given the opportunity to utilize technology and training tools for more in-depth swing analysis and feedback.
To cap it all off, players were divvied up into two teams on the final day of camp for a best-of-three “Orange vs Blue” series.
