Family, teammates, friends and coaches joined together Wednesday to celebrate Habersham Central’s Braydon Wright signing to play football at the University of the Cumberlands.
Located in Williamsburg, Ky., Wright stated that he chose the university because it “felt a lot like home.” He is very excited to continue his football career there, and it is the thing he is most looking forward to.
During the 2022 season, Wright had 82 tackles including 8.5 for loss (1 sack) and 2 fumble recoveries.
Raiders coach Benji Harrison recalled the first time he watched Wright play football.
“It would’ve been about five or six years ago, and I remember going over to Wilbanks and he was playing in middle school… I remember watching Braydon play, I knew who he was but I didn’t know you were good yet. I just remember watching him play and I said two things about it, ‘That kid is tough and he’s gonna be a really good football player.’ And he was spot on,” Harrison said.
Thinking back on his football career as a Raider, Wright recalls his favorite memory as “watching two of my friends try to carry me up the hill on the last day. It was pretty rough,” said Wright.
As the Raider transitions into becoming a Patriot, Wright is planning on getting a mechanical degree and learning about advertising to eventually go into real estate. “I love these days when you get to celebrate these guys and all the hard work they’ve put in,” Harrison said. “I tell ‘em all the time, if you can use football for a utensil that gets you into a good college, that’s a pretty good use of the sport.”
HCHS Principal Dr. Jonathan Stribling also shared his praise for Wright, saying “We’re very proud that you’re gonna go on here. Represent yourself, represent your family, represent your school… If I could tell you one thing, as you leave here and go to the University of the Cumberlands and do all the great things you’re going to do, don’t forget where you came from.”
Before Wright picked up his pen to make his commitment official, Harrison closed out noting. “It’s just a special day. It’s a win for him, it’s a win for our program, it’s obviously a win for his family… I’m proud, we’re proud of you.”
