Lady Raiders strike first, but Dacula too much to overcome

It seemed like the Habersham Central softball team had an upset in the making during their Wednesday night make-up game against the rival Dacula Falcons, the top ranked team in Region 8-6A.

Leadoff hitter Taylor Wade began the game like she has in most every game this season, beating out an infield slap single and stealing second. After a sacrifice bunt, a single, an error, and back-to-back RBI singles by Jayden Thomas and Joni Littlejohn, the Raiders had a 3-0 lead over the region leaders. The Falcons quickly made a pitching change, bringing in Maia Mumpfield to relieve starter Elise Poss – and after a groundout – the top of the first ended.

Dacula quickly reminded everyone why they are where they are in the standings, answering back with three runs of their own to tie the game after.

The pitching change they made in the first ultimately sealed the game for the Falcons. Habersham Central’s offense would be shut down for the rest of the game, and Dacula’s offense never slowed down. By the time the sixth inning ended, Dacula had tacked on nine more runs and the game was ended due to mercy rule.

HCHS’ overall record is 11-9 and they are 3-5 in region play.

Habersham Central 16, Shiloh 0

In four innings of play, the Lady Raiders scored 16 runs. Starting pitcher Hannah Odum pitched all four innings, allowing zero runs and striking out five. The game ended early due to the mercy rule.

The Lady Raiders’ next game is Tuesday, Sept. 28, away at Winder-Barrow at 5 p.m.
