A century of history was lost this week when the old Mud Creek Grocery store was torn down.
Judy Erwin, whose family ran the store for decades, was offered the store building as a keepsake.
“They told me they would put it in my front yard for me, but it was so eaten up with termites, rot, age … there was no way saving it,” Erwin said.
Adding to the problems, a car hit the store earlier this week and put a crack in the foundation.
Erwin’s father Lawton and her great uncle Louis ran the store for many years during her childhood, and Arthur Ivey ran it for a long period of time.
“A lot of talk and a lot of stories went on in that old building,” Erwin said. “We tried to preserve it over the years, but we all wear out.”
