Habersham Schools providing summer meals for kids

Even though school is out for summer and the hallways of schools are desolate, that doesn’t mean that those who work in the district stop caring for the students. While students are no longer wandering the halls of the schools they have grown to love, they are still receiving a vital resource.

Andrea Thomas, Nutrition Director for the district, has been in the role for just over 10 years. For as long as she can remember, the district has provided meals for students over the summers.

Habersham County students under 18 are all eligible for meals. There are two ways students can receive their meals, either take them home or eat at a designated location.

“Families there are congregated together, where children are in a group and they have to be onsite and eat together. And then the other one is for more of a parent pick up. We’re sending those buses and so you go to that location and look for the bus, and you pick up a lunch for that day and a breakfast for the next morning,” Thomas said.

Meals are available Monday through Thursday, but as the buses don’t run on Fridays, students and parents will pick up Friday’s meals Thursday when they pick up their meals for the day.

Both congregational and non-congregational meals will be offered from June 5 through July 20. There will be no meals on June 19 or July 3 through 7.

Congregational meals must be consumed on site and are available at the following locations and times:

  • Cornelia Elementary School, 12:15-12:30 p.m. 375 Old Cleveland Road, Cornelia;
  • Demorest Elementary School, 12:15-12:30 p.m. 3115 Demorest Mt. Airy Hwy, Demorest;

  • Habersham Ninth Grade Academy, 10:15-10:30 a.m. 171 Raider Circle, Mt. Airy.

Non-Congregational meals will be available throughout the county at various locations. Those interested in picking up these meals should go to the location from 12:15-12:30 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays and look for the yellow school bus. The pickup locations are as follows:
