School bus hit on 365

A van crashed into a school bus on Highway 365 Friday morning, damaging both vehicles but causing no serious injuries.

“The bus was stopping at a red light when the van struck the bus in the rear,” Superintendent Matthew Cooper said. “While our protocol allows the Georgia State Patrol to investigate accidents involving a school bus, it does appear that the incident was completely the fault of the driver who hit our bus.”

Both middle and high school students were on board the bus at the time of the incident.

“Our transportation department leaders did an excellent job of responding to the scene and of caring for our driver and students,” Cooper said. “We also had middle and high school principals respond to the scene to care for those students who were on the bus. Our school leaders contacted the parents of those involved. The students were then placed on a different bus and transported on to their schools.”

Cooper said that incidents like this underscore the importance of drivers using extreme caution on roadways and in school zones.

“Everyone should be aware that they are sharing our Habersham roadways with school buses and with many student drivers,” Cooper said. “We are very thankful that no serious injuries occured as a result of this incident.”
