Dr. Cendie R. Crawley

Graveside services for Dr. Cendie R. Crawley, 60, of Troy, Alabama were held Thursday, Dec. 30, at the New Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church cemetery in Linwood, Alabama. The Rev. Henry Lee Reynolds officiated.

  Dr. Crawley passed away Friday, Dec. 24, 2021.

  Born June 15, 1961, in Troy, Alabama, she was the daughter of Samuel David Crawley and the late Dorothy Nell Dubose. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Earl Crawley and grandparents, Algie Lee and Versie Lou Crawley and George Washington and Lula Jae Dubose.

  Dr. Crawley graduated from Alabama A&M University in May 1983 with her Bachelor of Science. In May 1989, she received her Master of Science from North Carolina Central University. She went on to receive her DMD degree from Temple University School of Dentistry in March 1994 and completed her dental residence program through State University of New York for Certification in General Dentistry Practice in Buffalo, New York on June 30, 1996. Dr. Crawley was certified by the Joint Commission of National Dental Examinations in 1996 and joined the U.S Public Health Service as a Commissioned Dental as a Lieutenant Junior Grade Officer where she served until 2000. In February 1997, the U.S. Surgeon General recommended Dr. Crawley for the Presidential Citation for Outstanding Service in the Reserve Dental Officer Program and this award was given on February 14 of that year.

After receiving her dental license from the state of Tennessee in January 2000 and also becoming licensed to practice in Kentucky, Virginia, Georgia, and Illinois, Dr. Crawley became the private owner of her solo dental practice in Demorest which she operated for over 20 years. She served in Jerusalem, Israel as a practicing dentist for poor Jewish and Palestinian children from September 2000 until January 2001 and continually did assignments on Native American Indian reservations throughout the United States.

Survivors include the love of her life, Joseph Johnson, Jr., whom she married in August 2006; her loving father, Samuel David Crawley of Troy, Alabama; three stepchildren, Audra (James) Nelson of Sumter, South Carolina, Jennifer Jones of Augusta, and Joseph T. (Theresa) Johnson of Baltimore, Maryland; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; aunts, Annie Ruth Henry (Michael Delroy) of Fairfax, Virginia, Bernice Ethridge of Houston, Texas, Peggy Daniels of Duluth, and Dorothy Stringer of Atlanta; uncles, Randolph (Henrietta) Crawley of Troy, Alabama, John David (Earnestine) Crawley of San Diego, California, and Willie James Crawley of Troy, Alabama; special nieces, Lakissa, Madie, Mary, and Louise (Teddy) all of Georgia; a special cousin, Adrienne Crooms of Greenville, North Carolina; special colleague, Dr. John (Tracey) Taylor of Gainesville; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, business colleagues, and special friends who will miss her dearly.
