The purpose of a letter to the editor is getting someone else to think about another side of a local issue or opportunity, or to put an issue or opportunity in front of the community. A letter can jump start ideas of how to make a better Habersham County. We reserve two opinion pages in every edition and value this as a vital cog of a community newspaper.
No, you don’t have to club anyone on the head in your letter. In fact, that is one of the major problems of today. Everyone seems to try and see who can hit the hardest instead of how to find compromise. No matter how frustrated you are with someone locally, we must remember we are part of the same community.
Often, we all hear people state the problem with this or that, but they never offer a solution. How about writing a letter offering a solution to an existing issue in our community?
Let’s remember, our elected officials were regular citizens before winning their election. And this is our community to make better for the next generation whether you are an elected official or a tax paying resident.
So, think about something that has been on your mind lately and send us a letter. If you have never written a letter to the editor before, our policy is pretty simple. We don’t allow letters to attack another citizen or business. And we only allow one letter per month from each writer of 350 words or less.
You can email, snail mail or drop the letter by our office. If you email the letter, send it to editor@thenortheastgeorgian.com.
Don’t forget to include your town of residence and your phone number for verification, though we will not publish the phone number. We look forward to hearing from you.
