Christmastime is here, and it’s time to prepare for parties, feasts and presents.
It is not generally time for elections, but here we are anyway, watching commercial after commercial for Herschel Walker and Raphael Warnock. And how do you like the barrage of text messages invading your phone?
We have said it here before but it is worth restating that none of the commercials actually tell us what a good job our senator will do for us. They only try to shame and discredit the other candidate.
But as annoyed as we all are with that, it is imperative that we vote.
The seat of U.S. Senator carries with it a six-year term, the longest term in any branch of government in our democracy, save for the lifetime appointments to the Supreme Court.
We have an important decision to make as to who to send to Washington to represent us for that time. Hard as it is to believe, Sen. Jon Ossoff is the “senior” senator from Georgia at the ripe old age of 35, with senior simply referring to the senator elected the longest ago to a full term.
With Ossoff finding his legs in the Washington swamp,, we need to pair the right person with him to try and help move Georgia forward.
The voters in our country seem to have received the message already, as more than 6,000 ballots had already been cast for the runoff through Wednesday. Habersham County has a history of poor turnout in runoffs and special elections, and it is encouraging to see us turning that trend around.
Six years is a long time. Just think what any of you would have said six years ago if we told you what we would endure in the time to come.
So let’s keep getting out to vote and make sure the person we send to Washington through 2028 is the right one who will work for us and not just sell out to the lobbyists.
Voting is our right and our privilege, even at Christmastime.
