DA’s office recused itself

To the editor: In Mr. Locke Arnold’s letter published in the Feb. 3, 2023, edition of the paper he expressed his dissatisfaction with the outcome of the Magistrate Gerald Johnson matter. It appears he mistakenly believed that my office was involved with this matter. It was not.

In the very beginning of the Magistrate Johnson matter it was readily apparent that my office had a legal conflict and could not be involved. I consulted with the Prosecuting Attorneys Council of Georgia about the conflict and thereafter, following statutory authority, notified the Attorney General of Georgia of the conflict.

Attorney General Chris Carr appointed Northeastern Judicial Circuit District Attorney Lee Darragh, as District Attorney Pro Tempore in the Magistrate Johnson matter.

I simply want your readers to know that my office was legally conflicted out of this matter and by law did not participate in this matter. Thank you.

George Christian
