Fair is a must-see event

To the editor: County fairs have been a tradition in our country for more than a 170 years. Habersham County has hosted our annual Chattahoochee Mountain Fair for more than 45 years and this year they have events to entertain the young and old.

With the traditional livestock shows, baking and canning contest, talent show, petting zoo, rodeo and the midway, you will not have to travel far to enjoy a fun, family friendly and free entertainment here in Habersham County.

Our local fair is a celebration that brings our community together.  Fairs are social event that gets people out and socializing with others in our community.  Inside the commercial building you can get to know local law enforcement, community churches, health care providers and local businesses.

These county departments and community businesses care about our community and are there to meet and greet the public they serve.

A favorite is the WCON Talent contest, where you will hear up and coming talent of all ages. On the last Friday and Saturday, Hayes Automotive will again sponsor the Rodeo with bucking broncos, calf roping, barrel racing and steer wrestling.

This year’s fair will feature not only our HCHS Band of Blues but the Banks County High School Band.

You don’t want to miss the fabulous food at the fair. Corn dogs, cotton candy, funnel cakes and local BBQ is always a treat to feast upon.

It is sad to see many of our neighboring counties no longer sponsor a county fair. That gives Habersham an opportunity to showcase our community and the business and services we provide.

Just think about what is at stake if the fair was to go away; a rich heritage of our agriculture roots, affordable fun and friendship for all ages to enjoy.

You can find the fair schedule online at chattahoocheemountainfair.org or in a special insert in The Northeast Georgian today. Don’t miss it.
