Since 1996, Habersham Medical Center has operated Total Fitness, first at Piedmont University and the Ruby Fulbright Aquatic Center.
We value physical fitness and believe our participation at Total Fitness since 2006, has contributed to our overall wellness as we age. The physical fitness part is important but also the socialization. Isolation is a hazard in our society as a whole today especially seniors.
We were shocked and saddened to read of the Total Fitness closure in The Northeast Georgian. This announcement has made many members reflect on the important role Total Fitness plays in the lives of their 500 members and the life of this community.
The majority of members are seniors, but others including community corporations, will be impacted as well.
Since receiving the news, we have heard comments like “my dad just started coming here, he won’t go anywhere else;” Total Fitness has become like family to me;” “I don’t know everyone’s name, but I know some of their story.”
Of course, we don’t know all the “whys” of the impending closure. Our hope is that the fitness center can continue operations as part of the aquatic center and recreation department. The space and equipment are already at the Aquatic Center.
The combined resources of the Recreation Department and Total Fitness provide one of the few, if not the only, option in Habersham County where you can walk or run inside or outside safely, do cardiovascular and weight training and swim in one location.
With new leadership at the county and the recreation department, there is a great opportunity for Habersham County to support seniors and others as they pursue healthy lives.
