To the editor: In both articles I have read about the landfill, it seems to me the county leaders are acting very much like the current presidential administration – blame the people who elected them.
In both articles, county residents are blamed for failing to recycle. In my experience, the people who are using the recycle stations are mostly senior citizens. When the plastics bin at the Clarkesville station was moved, a dangerous metal staircase was added to drop plastics in from the top. I can’t speak for others, but personally I’m not willing to risk a fall from that staircase. The site as a whole seems designed to discourage use. Additionally, the fact that only plastics 1 and 2 can be deposited limits the effectiveness of recycling efforts. In addition to exploring options to increase the capacity of the landfill, commissioners must address the woefully inadequate recycling options available to county residents.
