Irene Bender: Reboot our recycling

To the editor:

It’s time to recycle, and I wonder how many people dread the trip to the center in Clarkesville as I do.

The road is full of potholes, the trucks for paper and cardboard are unsafe to walk on and the bin for plastic is the worst. You must climb a flight of stairs to dispose of the recyclables. What about the folks who can’t climb stairs?

The county cannot make it any harder to recycle if it tried. Nearby counties’ recycling centers are convenient and easy to use. Habersham can do better and should make it a priority. Simplify the process, make it user friendly and more people will use it. Investing in recycling will pay for itself and reduce the cost of the landfill in the long run.
