Downfall of society
To the editor:
In the July 7, 2023, edition of The Sword of the Lord newspaper, an article appeared that caught my attention. The article was about Edward Gibbon’s “Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire” written in 1788. In the article, there were five basic reasons for the fall:
An undermining of the dignity and the sanctity of the home, which is the basis for human society.
• Higher and higher taxes and spending public money for free bread and circuses for the populace.
• A mad craze for pleasure with pastimes becoming every year more exciting, brutal and immoral.
• Building great armaments, although the real enemy was within-the decay of individual responsibility.
• Decay of religion-faith fading into mere form, losing touch with life and losing power to guide the people.
The article went on to say: “one wonders whether historians centuries from now will find a deadly parallel between the U.S. and Imperial Rome.”
As I considered this and what our country is like today, we seem to be headed in the same direction.
Consider, the LGBTQ+ community has demanded tolerance for their lifestyles, but have no tolerance from them for those who disagree.
Parents who have the God given right to properly raise their children, are vilified by school officials if they disagree with what is being taught. If it wasn’t so serious, it would be laughable that many educators can’t verbalize they know the difference between a boy and a girl and recognize phases they each go through.
There are other signs, all approved by the ruling party today, including the elimination of those undesirable babies anytime from conception to birth. Since I am old enough to remember, this seems much like the Nazi party of the 30’s and 40’s.
My constant prayer today is that God will raise up those who can reverse this downward spiral and make us a Godfearing nation.
