Spending spree

To the editor: I read Mr. Osborne’s lead article Oct. 19th (front page) with utter disbelief! You mean to tell me that Habersham county officials have allowed a cost overrun of $6 million on three simple projects? I smell something really bad! A few thousand maybe, 10 thousand, maybe for each project. But $6 million in overruns sounds like something criminal to me.

Even I wouldn’t miss by that much in planning. I think this needs to be investigated and in my current frame of mind, someone needs to go to jail for this outrage. I admit that I am not the smartest person here in Habersham, but I can assure you that would not happen under my watch! I call for an investigation into where every dime of all that money went and how in the world could an educated person miss a project cost by that much money.

I have to suspect payoffs here as well as incredibly poor planning. That’s my money they are wasting and right now I just can’t afford it. We should expect every cent to be accounted for and published in this newspaper – in detail. In addition, the amounts paid out should be normal costs and not extreme. If extremes are paid, we should demand a refund.

Here is an idea. Never give someone (hospital authority and a PFA comes to mind) free reign over the county’s money for any reason. I would not do that with my personal assets unless I was comatose. That is just plain irresponsible! The commissioners are responsible and they should BE responsible for this! Recall the hospital authority and don’t even think about a PFA and get the spending under control. It’s the commissioners job to oversee this. Don’t hire people you can blame if it goes wrong. Do it yourselves! Be responsible! Above all, be in control of the money.

People! The county leadership needs to get this ship under control before it becomes ship wrecked! If they can’t do it, let’s get people in this job that can, or should I say, “will” do it. What next? Million dollar gold toilet seats in the ladies room at the county office? Ya’ll are acting like the Biden Administration!

Go to www.habershamga.com/firestations.cfm and see if you can figure out where the extra $5 million for the fire station went.
