To the editor: Those of us who attend Total Fitness at the Aquatic Center were devastated to hear that “our” exercise place was being closed. Total Fitness has been operational in Habersham County, under the auspices of Habersham Medical Center, since 1996 and many of us have been members there for 20-plus years.
Total Fitness is unique in its focus on the senior citizens of the county(although there are also many members who are NOT seniors) and it has come to feel like home since we all know each other by sight if not by name. Although the staff there is very helpful, we know that other members will help out if we have a problem with the machines or need some other assistance.
We understand that Northeast Georgia Medical Center isn’t interested in taking on an exercise venue, although we have heard that it actually does make a small profit. However, some of us wonder if the county commissioners and rec center director would consider adding Total Fitness to the activities already being conducted at the aquatic center, such as pickle ball, basketball, swimming etc. The equipment is already there and if the rec department is willing to apply for Silver Sneakers coverage, their income is guaranteed from many of the members.
We hope that the rec center and the commissioners will give serious consideration to this possibility.
