No suspects have been named in connection with the death of an Athens woman, who was discovered on the northern end of the county near Tallulah Falls School on Sept. 7, which authorities are now investigating as a potential homicide.
According to Col. Murray Kogod with Habersham County Sheriff’s Department, the coroner’s office transported the body to the GBI Crime Lab for autopsy Tuesday, as the hunt for a potential suspect continues almost two weeks since the remains of the missing woman were found. Kogod said the sheriff’s office is utilizing all resources in what has become a far-reaching investigation.
“We’ve conducted interviews and executed search warrants in Athens-Clarke County and Habersham regarding the investigation,” Kogod said. “We have submitted several items of possible evidence to GBI Crime Lab for analysis, and our investigators are continuing to follow up on possible leads and gather more information.”
Kogod said the investigation is still in its early stages, and that no suspects have been named at this time, though authorities hope to identify a person of interest for questioning once more information is gathered.
“At this time it’s still very fresh,” Kogod said. “We’re still trying to gather as much information as possible so we may be able to identify someone of interest to speak with…we’re still pulling at the evidence together to possibly identify someone who would be a person of interest.”
