Truett McConnell University has officially parted ways with former TMU President Emir Caner.

Newly named Interim President Dr. John Yarbrough informed media representatives during a press conference on Friday, Sept. 26, that the Board of Trustees decided Caner should separate from the school. Yarbrough said the terms of Caner's separation are still being negotiated.

Caner was placed on administrative leave this past summer, and Yarbrough was then appointed acting president.

Yarbrough said he is not seeking the job of president, and that the Board of Trustees will appoint a search committee for the purpose of hiring a new president.

The announcement came after the Board met with third-party investigator Richard Hyde on Thursday, Sept. 25, to hear the findings of a months-long investigation into sexual abuse and cover-up allegations.

Yarbrough said he was not present in the closed door session when the trustees heard Hyde's oral report. The university has not publicly shared results of the investigation.

The school launched the investigation after former TMU student-athlete Hayle Swinson had alleged longtime administrator Bradley Reynolds – who left the university in 2024 – manipulated and abused her for years. Swinson was interviewed by Christian media outlet the Roys Report, which first broke the story.

The White County News will have a more in-depth story in next week's print edition.
