East Mize Road Bridge closed due to rainfall

A bridge closure has gone into effect on East Mize Road in Demorest. The bridge will be closed on this road for at least two weeks. This closure is a result of rainfall Habersham County has received in recent days.  This closure is in place as of 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. The public will be updated.

Sutton bid farewell by county employees, community leaders

Phil Sutton is not leaving Habersham County, and neither will his legacy as county manager be forgotten by those he has worked with.

School board rolls back millage rate

The Habersham County Board of Education approved a rollback millage rate Monday night that will generate a projected $16,103,671 for the school system this year.  The rollback net millage rate is 12.566 mills for the Fiscal Year 2022, down from 13.414 mills last year. One “mill” is equal to one U.

HEMC taps three new directors

Habersham Electric Membership Corporation (HEMC) elected new leaders during a July 15 business meeting held at the Habersham County Ninth Grade Academy. HEMC President Bryan Ferguson spoke to the crowd in attendance before the votes were counted. “Safety is our top priority,” Ferguson said.

‘Angel’ lost in fatal crash

A Clarkesville teenager was killed Saturday morning in a crash on Highway 17. Kira Elise Scott, 19, was driving southbound on Highway 17 when she veered out of her lane near Cool Springs Road, according to a report by the Georgia State Patrol.

Standing together

The Northeast Georgia Brotherhood of Veterans & Patriots had not come together for 18 months, but on Saturday morning, they were once again able to gather and share fellowship with one another.

South Hab righted the ship in ’63

Entering 1963, South Habersham’s football team hadn’t had much success in recent history. But that was set to change, as the Rebels earned a subregion championship and turned in one of their best seasons in school history.
