New bilingual coordinators help meet students’ needs

In order to improve parent engagement and promote student achievement, Habersham County Schools are focusing on bringing more Parent Involvement Coordinators (PICs) on board across all 14 schools.

Anyone standing on the front porch of Warren Hencely’s Mount Airy home can smell it in the air: The crisp, natural fragrance of wood, maybe oak or maple, that had probably just been sawed into pieces or sanded smooth moments prior.

Unmarked graves discovered during cemetery remapping

   More than 1,200 headstones dating as far back as the 1850s are spread across the grounds of Crossroads Baptist Church Cemetery in Clarkesville.

Sheriff sets sights on recruiting

   Habersham County Sheriff Joey Terrell said it can cost the sheriff’s office upwards of $30,000 to $50,000 to train an officer without previous experience. So while he prefers to not have to do that, it’s a price he’s willing to pay to help offset the staffing shortage at the sheriff’s office.

Arrest made in Cornelia rape case

   Lester Hoyte, 35, of Toccoa was arrested on Tuesday on charges of rape, false imprisonment, sodomy and battery in relation to an incident involving a 17-year-old female.

Learning from the best - Students gain from high school’s certified vocational programs

   Two vocational programs at Habersham Central High School recently earned industry certification, the highest level of distinction awarded to programs within Career, Technical and Agricultural (CTAE) high school programs.

Dog kills eight cats in garage

   For more than five hours, a couple in Cornelia waited on the Habersham County Animal Control to help save their cats after two dogs broke into their garage, killing seven and injuring another.     The incident took place on April 11 at approximately 9:30 a.m.
