Habersham Central’s Game Day Cheer squad traveled to Columbus State University this past week to compete in the 2023 GHSA Game Day State Championship on Feb. 24. The girls performed their hearts out in preliminary competition of the highly competitive 5/6A division to earn a spot in the state finals, then placed ninth in the state after their final routines.
This is the first Habersham Game Day squad to advance to the state finals.
Game Day is a competition that celebrates traditional cheerleading. The contest focuses on four aspects of spirit leading and crowd involvement during a game experience – band chant, situational cheer, crowd leading, and fight song.
Each of these elements require squads to engage the audience through dance, stunts, and tumbling using traditional props such as poms, signs, megaphones, and flags to promote school spirit. In addition, teams competing in finals are also given an offensive or defensive prompt during their routine and must respond with a cheer appropriately.
All of these elements must be completed within three minutes.
