Habersham Central’s wrestling team competed in the 10-team Grayson High School Varsity Tournament on Nov. 23 and finished as the runner-up.
The Raiders defeated Hillcrest High School (S.C.), Loganville High, South Dekalb High and Roswell High en route to the finals before losing to North Forsyth in their final match.
Hillcrest has three state championships and a runner-up finish the last four years.
“This team really stepped it up for this tournament,” Raiders coach Morris Brooks said. “This was our first competition this season.”
Landyn Savage went 4-1 with four pins, while fellow sophomore Justin Whitney also went 4-1 with a win against North Forsyth, a team the Raiders will be seeing again in the area duals.
Westin Lakey was 4-1 with three pins and a pin over his Hillcrest opponent, putting the Raiders over the top for the dual win.
Zach Chitwood went 4-1 with three pins at 106 pounds.
The Raiders wrestled a tri-match in Dawson County after press time Tuesday. They will compete at the Jackson County Invitational this weekend.
