Habersham Central rebooted its “Reading with the Raiders” program this year after many years dormant.
“In the past, we have had our football players and cheerleaders go to elementary schools at certain times on Friday game days during the football season to read to classrooms of students at various grade levels,” HCHS counselor Jalen Hulsey said. “Our hope has been that this gets our young future Raiders excited about school, reading, and joining into the community of extracurricular activities we have by interacting with positive role models in our high school.”
This year, the school has selected senior football players and cheerleaders who exhibit the characteristics that make them great candidates, and they have created a schedule that allows for each elementary school to have a reading day twice within the 2022 football season. The program started Aug. 19 at Demorest and Clarkesville elementary schools.
