HCHS soccer teams pull off double title feat ... again
The Habersham Central soccer teams are your GHSA Region 8-5A CHAMPIONS.
Habersham's girls took down rival Jackson County 2-1 to capture HCHS' second straight region title.
Midway through the first half, Annabelle Clark put the moves on a pair of Panthers' defenders before drilling a goal to put the Lady Raiders on top 1-0.
Minutes later, Jaxco answered to knot the match at 1-1. That score remained on the board at halftime.
In the early minutes of the second half, the Lady Raiders were awarded a penalty kick. Forward Meg LaBarbera capitalized - netting the go ahead goal. This time, the one goal advantage held up, leaving Habersham on top for good.
About two hours after witnessing their female counterparts do the same, the HCHS boys outlasted Jaxco 3-1 to secure another trophy of their own.
Less than a minute into the action, Diego González carved up the Panthers' back line before being tackled and awarded a PK - which he converted.
Later in the opening half, Israel Pascual finished off a Kieren Wallace set piece into the box, doubling the Raiders' lead.
Diego Alcaraz made it 3-0 shortly thereafter.
The Panthers were able to get a goal of their own before the break, but by then the home squad had already done enough to secure the victory.
Just a year ago, the two teams made Habersham County soccer history after each winning the region.
Now the feat appears it could become a regular occurrence.
