Pivotal game up next
The Habersham Central football team took down Apalachee 49-14 in Mt. Airy on Friday night to improve to 4-5 overall. Due to scheduling issues caused by both Hurricane Helene and the tragic school shooting at Apalachee in September, the game does NOT count as a region matchup.
Facing a far inferior Wildcat team, the Raiders' mission was simple: secure the win and turn the focus to next week's showdown with Jackson County.
"I thought our guys handled it pretty well," Coach Benji Harrison said after the win. "We were a little sloppy at times, so there's some stuff we need to clean up, but anytime you can get a win - even if it's a little ugly - we'll take it."
One main story of the evening was Raider senior receiver Zeke Whittington, who surpassed HCHS great Tavarres King as the program's all-time receiving yards leader. The reception that pushed Whittington over the mark took place early in the game. Following the catch, the game was briefly paused as King presented Whittington with a commemorative game ball.
