County looks to improve recycling facilities

   Habersham County has been dealing with a landfill problem for years, and the logical solution is to step up efforts to recycle. But the county is struggling with the recycling programs it already has, let alone something better.

Author shares joy of reading

   Author and Illustrator Shanda McCloskey spoke at Wilbanks Middle School last Thursday to wrap up this year’s One Book Habersham community effort. McCloskey lives in Ball Ground and  she illustrated the chosen book for 2024, “Little Red and the Big Bad Editor.

Demorest continues land plan

   It can be hard to make conversations about municipal zoning fun, but Demorest city officials opened a pack of Crayola colored pencils and gave it a shot. The city held its second public meeting to discuss updates to its land use ordinance using a hand-colored map as the guide.

The Mountain Traveler cover contest now underway

   Summer in Northeast Georgia is a great time for camping, attending a fun festival or planning a day trip for hiking or biking.    If you have a photograph that represents this beautiful time of year, it could be featured on the cover of The Mountain Traveler’s summer 2024 edition.

Where dreams come true

   Theater plays a role in nearly every realm of 17-year-old Lilly Kate Farrar’s life, and most recently it sent her on an all-expenses-paid trip to Disney World to attend the 2024 Disney Dreamers Academy, a leadership conference where students can choose a pathway in the career they hope to pursue.

Retail, residence combo in play for courthouse

   The redevelopment of the old courthouse in Clarkesville has been debated for more than a decade, but turning that site into a beautiful asset for the city is a dream that seems reachable now.

Scout builds bridge to ‘real world’ with Eagle award

   Trey Heumaneus is one of many Scouts in the Clarkesville Troop 5 program who is fully prepared for life, just like the motto says.    Heumaneus has been in Scouts since his Tiger den, and he recently achieved the rank of Eagle, the highest rank a Scout can reach.

Fieldale breaks ground on solar farm

   Wednesday’s cloudy afternoon did not stop the excitement at Fieldale Farms’ groundbreaking of a six acre solar farm at the intersection of Duncan Bridge Road and Gainesville Highway in Baldwin.

Chosewood adds National Merit Scholar to his list of accolades

   Brad Chosewood has about a month left of high school, but the Habersham Central salutatorian, STAR student and soon-to-be Ivy League shot put athlete is not done reaching new heights.    Most recently, he was named a National Merit Scholar after a lengthy selection process.
