Fly, Eagle, fly

Joseph McGahee, a student at Tallulah Falls School and third generation Scout, recently received the designation of Eagle after years of dedication to Scouting. The journey that led to where he is today began in the first grade, when he started as a Cub Scout.

Habersham County weathers the storm

Severe storms pummelled Habersham County Tuesday as Tropical Storm Fred moved inland after making landfall on Florida’s coast Monday night. A tornado which was reported to have touched down in Banks County Tuesday morning sparked warnings, flooding and road closures throughout Habersham County.

County plans to remove abandoned airplanes

Two abandoned airplanes currently take up space at the Habersham County Airport. Fixed Based Operations Manager Brenda Reed said each plane has been there for almost 10 years, and that neither of the planes’ owners are in a position to reclaim them, likely due to declining health.

Longtime volunteer helps feed community

Meals on Wheels, a program which delivers meals to senior citizens, has a dedicated volunteer in the Habersham County community. Nancy Stovall, a Habersham County local and the county’s longest serving Meals on Wheels volunteer, has been with the program for decades.

Breaking down barriers

Baldwin Elementary School has a total enrollment of 370 students – 60 percent of whom are Hispanic. The significance of this statistic can be seen by the school’s faculty on a daily basis.

School finances looking strong

Last summer, Habersham County Schools were in a world of uncertainty. School officials did not know if the pandemic’s deep cuts in state funding would cause ripple effects that would trickle right down to the nearly 7,000 students, or to the staffers who work so hard to teach them.

Austin proud of life serving county, Demorest in office

Demorest Rick Austin said Thursday that he is ready to self-impose a term limit as the city’s leader, declaring that he will not run in this year’s election for mayor after eight years in the position. “It has been my distinct honor to serve this county and community for the past 20 years.
