Bandit nabs cupcakes in crime spree

   Police are looking into a series of break-ins in downtown Cornelia that happened over a five-day span last week.    One of those happened at Sugartopia bakery on Main Street around 4:30 a.m., co-owner Jamie Keller said.    “He broke in the side door and cleaned out the register,” Keller said.

County commissioners clash in budget stalemate

   After more than two hours of arguing and trying to broker peace, Habersham County Chairman Ty Akins had seen enough.

Woodall earns county commission seat

   Eric Holbrooks made it clear he is no quitter.    He received the printout with the early-vote count on it Tuesday night, but despite a large deficit, he was not ready to go home. He hoped his folks from the north end of the county and his home community of Mt. Airy would pull him through.

County crunches budget numbers

   Habersham County’s Board of Commissioners are working toward finalizing the 2024-25 budget Monday night after deciding which positions and capital projects to fund.    The commissioners turned in worksheets this week with their preferences for adding on to the preliminary budget.

Demorest working to fully map city cemetery

   Demorest is now in the process of modernizing its cemetery.    An ordinance passed by the city council earlier this month effectively implemented an electronic mapping system, which can be accessed by users online to find the burial sites of their ancestors.

‘Beacon of great hope’

   Flag Day is recognized each year on June 14, and the community celebrated Friday with an event at the Habersham County Wall of Honor and a flag retirement ceremony with the help of local Boy Scouts.    Grant-Reeves VFW Post 7720 Commander Bill Miles spoke on the symbolism of the American flag.

County budget eyes rollback despite increase

   Habersham County presented its first budget proposal Monday night and suggested that a millage rollback is not only possible, but probable.

School board approves Crandall as new North Hab principal

   The Habersham County Board of Education approved Dr. Renee Crandall as the new principal of North Habersham Middle School.

RUNOFF ELECTION: Results from District 1

   Kelly Woodall easily outpaced Eric Holbrooks in Tuesday's runoff to earn a seat on the Habersham County Board of Commissioners beginning in January 2025.    Woodall unofficially received 1,425 votes (59.4 percent) to Holbrooks' 972.
