Judge: Marriott hotel procedure was legal

Plans to thwart the progress on construction of a Marriott hotel to be built in Cornelia failed during a bond hearing last Thursday after local resident Carl Blackburn’s opposition was unsuccessful. “Why are we picking winners and losers?” Blackburn said.

Kids on Wheels returns Saturday: The Kids on Wheels free event will return to Clarkesville on Saturday, June 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Clarkesville Police Station. There will be all kinds of fun vehicles in which kids can cruise the show, or they can bring their own set of wheels.

County could face budget crunch, tax hike

Habersham County may have some difficult budget decisions ahead, as the preliminary tax digest numbers are far lower than expected in the last iteration of the 2022-23 fiscal plan. The county made cuts in May based on a projected 18.4 percent increase in the tax digest to bring in an additional $2.

In 1947, Lester Sutton opened Cornelia Tire and Recap on Highway 441 South in Cornelia. After returning from World War II, Sutton opened his business retreading passenger and truck tires. At the time, he was a one man show.
