Members of the community came out Wednesday evening to join Daniel Vega of Cornelia in a George Floyd Memorial 10K to support the black community and lives of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and other African Americans. Vega said this was a way to start the conversation addressing the division in the U.S. The runners and children on bicycles began at City Hall in Cornelia to go all the way to Walmart and back. The Cornelia Police Department attended to help ensure a safe escort as they were near busy streets.

Peaceful protest planned for Clarkesville today

   Many Habersham County residents plan to stand in unity against racism and police brutality today at a peaceful protest in Clarkesville. The protest and others like it around the country were spurred by the May 25 death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officers.

Demorest cancels Fourth of July fireworks

   The Demorest Glorious Fourth of July celebration, an event that has been running for over 125 years, has been cancelled for the third time in its history.     The city council approved to push the celebration to a later date in the fall.     “I think adapt is the appropriate word.

Demorest residents divided on political agendas

   As weeks pass following the termination and reinstatement of Demorest Police Chief Robin Krockum and several events that transpired from it, there are two factions displaying different agendas on how the mayor and council should be conducting business.

   Habersham County’s Board of Commissioners plans to meet Monday morning with Banks County Fire Chief Steve Nichols regarding its future radio system purchase, a project that could have ramifications across the county and its cities if its budgeted funds are reduced.

Baldwin City Hall opens to the public Monday, June 8

   At its work session Tuesday night, the city of Baldwin announced that it would be reopening to the public on Monday, June 8.     “We’re going to open up city hall Monday to better serve our citizens,” City Administrator Jerry Neace said.

SPLOST talks continue across three meetings Monday

   Habersham County’s Commissioners were hoping to make a decision about their SPLOST VII projects Monday night, but two factors caused them to put it all on hold once again.
