Southern Bank & Trust sold to Pinnacle Bank

   The last locally-owned bank in Habersham County is nearly gone.    Clarkesville-based Southern Bank & Trust will be purchased by Pinnacle Financial Corporation for $36 million.

   Habersham County’s 4-H Club raked in the ribbons for the calendar year 2019, as students from all over the county showed their prowess in various fields of agriculture and the arts.     The students were honored at the Dec.

Tree sale under way through Dec. 31

   The Soque River Watershed Association’s 7th annual tree sale is now underway. Research indicates that the presence of trees in a community can encourage people to be more physically active in addition to positively affecting their attitudes and behaviors.

Habersham schools to save $800K with bond adjustment

   The Habersham County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution from the board of education Monday night to refinance general obligation bonds, resulting in nearly $800,000 in savings on interest and freeing up E-SPLOST funds to meet needs in schools.

Oglethorpe County judge rules in Wilbros' favor on dumping

   Just as Habersham County started considering possible enforcement action it could take in regard to Wilbros LLC’s operations in Clarkesville, a judge in Oglethorpe County on Dec. 7 ruled in favor of Wilbros and two other of Joe Wilbanks Jr.’s companies, allowing them to continue operations there.

   It’s a surprising number. Of the 19,695 vehicles that traveled on Willingham Avenue in Baldwin in August, 2,375 of them, or 12%, exceeded the speed limit by at least 11 mph during school hours over five days.

   After six months dormant, Habersham County Commissioners brought back the discussion Monday about declaring the county a “Second Amendment Sanctuary County,” as so many other counties around the nation have done this year.
