Lifetime teacher reflects on all the memories

One thing Candace Oliver will miss when she retires from teaching is the key to her classroom. “It not only unlocked my door, but it unlocked 30 years of some of the most stressful, difficult, demanding, but yet sweetest, fulfilling and best memories of my life,” she said.

Department of Public Health provides outbreak updates

Fewer than 10 children in Georgia have been diagnosed with pediatric hepatitis, State Epidemiologist Cherie L. Drenzek said at the state Board of Public Health’s (DPH) monthly meeting Tuesday. The pediatric hepatitis outbreak began in Alabama in October 2021.

Fire destroys Lake Rabun home

A three-story home on Lake Rabun was a total loss following a fire on Monday evening at 989 Mathis Dam Rd. The firefighting effort led to five firefighters having to be treated by EMS for heat exhaustion and dehydration, but none were transported.

Old Nacoochee celebrates two centuries of faith

Deacon Benny Miller wore his clean overalls and a big smile as he rang the bell Sunday, marking the call to worship at Old Nacoochee Baptist Church. The congregation was preparing to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the church, which was founded in 1822.

A carefree Sunday drive through Northeast Georgia turned into an unexpected award-wining photo session for Dahlonega resident Rhonda Hardy recently. Though she did have one actual care while snapping what would eventually be the Mountain Traveler cover photo.

DPH details rising danger of fentanyl

The Georgia Department of Public Health discussed increasing fentanyl overdose deaths, COVID rates, and a mysterious hepatitis outbreak among children at its May meeting. Fentanyl-involved overdose deaths in Georgia increased 218 percent from 2019 to 2021, said epidemiologist Dr. Laura Edison.
