Municipal ballots filling up with candidates

   Even before qualifying is complete, this year’s municipal elections in Habersham County are going to be among the most contested in years.    Three candidates are qualified to be the next mayor of Alto, including incumbent P.J. Huggins and challengers John Smith and Patricia Gail Armour.

Stoney's in Clarkesville closes after 58 years

   Many folks in Clarkesville will need to find a new breakfast spot after the closing of the iconic family restaurant Stoney’s.    The restaurant sits at the corner of Highways 17 and 197, where a future roundabout is set to be constructed by the Department of Transportation.

Cleveland Councilwoman forced to resign after moving to Habersham

   Rebecca Yardley is resigning from the Cleveland City Council, effective Aug. 31. She shared her intent to resign in a letter dated Aug. 21 to Mayor Josh Turner and the city council.    She has served as the representative for Ward 2 since 2020, and the seat is up for reelection this year.

Still the best of friends, three years later

   Tony Romano and his 4-year-old Samoyed Bella have become best friends over the past three years, and some would even say that they’ve saved each other.    Romano has had several Samoyeds over the years, his last being Sam, who passed away on Thanksgiving of 2019.

A swimming success

Habersham County gave birth to a new community event Saturday with its Swim Safely Day that included 155 participants, 90 of them children. The free event at the Habersham County Ruby Fulbright Aquatic Center near Clarkesville was made possible through community donations.

Seven candidates filed for municipal elections across Habersham County in the opening days of the qualifying period this week, and the stage is already set for a race to be Baldwin’s next mayor.

County set to appeal low tax ratio score

Habersham County released findings of a sales ratio study Monday indicating that the county’s tax digest joined 74 percent of Georgia counties with appraisals below the state’s preferred threshold.

The Town of Tallulah Falls has a new interim council member as Cissy Henry was voted in at the council meeting Aug. 16 to fill the seat recently left vacant by Tom Tilley.
