   As the Habersham Central basketball team continues to work through summer with lifting and workouts, one Raider hoopster is putting up numbers elsewhere.    Junior guard Justus Gober has logged some big time minutes with his AAU team, North Georgia Elite.

Lady Raiders volleyball campers get tips from the pros

   Habersham Central Volleyball held its All-American Team Camp this week in Mt. Airy. The Lady Raiders’ high school and middle school teams were in attendance Monday-Tuesday, while Wednesday was reserved for the former.    This year’s guests of the camp were Santita Ebangwese and Lauren Ford.

Animal shelter runs over capacity, avoids euthanasia

   After leaping above true capacity numbers, Habersham County Animal Care and Control successfully sent a few dogs to learn new homes. Last Friday started with an influx of six dogs, said director of the shelter Madi Nix.

Local man’s military memorabilia is a tribute to service

   Mount Airy resident and Vietnam War Veteran Charlie Mack “BooBee” Booth houses a military memorabilia collection dating back to World War II that would rival anyone’s.    Booth was in ninth grade when he decided to drop out of school and serve his country.

Clarkesville hosted Red, White & Tunes on Saturday night, with Steve Bryson and his band as the musical headliner for the fun, fellowship and fireworks.

Highway 365 crashes take 5 lives, hurt 7

Habersham County suffered two horrific crashes over the weekend, the worst of which killed five people, including two small children. Both crashes occurred on Highway 365, which has been notorious for being one of the most dangerous highways in the region.

WWII veteran recalls Naval service in the Pacific Theater

Henry “Hank” Sawicki was 17 when he entered service in the U.S. Navy in World War II. Looking back at age 97, it is sometimes hard to recall all the details. “There is only so much I can remember because of the time since then,” Sawicki said. “Things pop up every now and then.
