WWII veteran recalls Naval service in the Pacific Theater

Henry “Hank” Sawicki was 17 when he entered service in the U.S. Navy in World War II. Looking back at age 97, it is sometimes hard to recall all the details. “There is only so much I can remember because of the time since then,” Sawicki said. “Things pop up every now and then.

Davenport honored with Piedmont University endowed scholarship

Piedmont University celebrated Audrey Davenport and a new endowed scholarship in her name on June 16 at a luncheon held in Demorest. Davenport, who grew up in Cornelia, was honored for her many contributions to the Habersham County community.

Love Family recalls historic journey at annual reunion

On Saturday, a gathering of 27 relatives who descended from William Love (1797-1870) and John Love (1788-1880) took place at Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Hollywood. The Love Family Reunion has been an annual event for 12 years.

School board set to roll back millage rate

Habersham County’s school system is planning to roll back its millage rate this year to ease the burden on local taxpayers. The tax digest information local officials have been waiting patiently for finally arrived last week, showing an 8.76 percent increase across the board.
