Summer gas prices shooting up quickly

An overnight jump in the price of gas is raising concern of a repeat of last year’s gas price expenses still on the minds of many. Last week, the State of Georgia had an average regular fuel price of $3.332. As of Thursday, the daily average across the state is sitting at $3.523.

Demorest coffee shop opens Saturday

Farmhouse Coffee is coming soon to the previous space of the Temperance House in Demorest. The Cleveland-based company is opening a shop right in the square, hoping to bring what Habersham has been asking for.

It’s nearly time ...

Now only a week away from the season’s unofficial opener against East Hall, there’s a different aura hovering over Raider Stadium. It’s still treacherously warm outside, but Habersham football hasn’t missed a beat. Coach Benji Harrison and staff have the guys focused and in business mode.

Moree earns All-State nod, turns gaze to road ahead

Baseball standout and recent Tallulah Falls graduate Frankey Moree has been named to the Georgia Dugout Club’s All-State team. The honor comes on the heels of a breakout season in which the Jamaican slugger boasted an .449 average – the fourth highest in program history.

A private memorial

The Warren-Martin/Smith Family Cemetery has been a mystery to residents and local genealogists for more than two decades. Since the burial of B.P. Smith’s infant daughter in May 1911, part of the intrigue surrounds the absence of any further burials.

Officers not messing around with speeding

More than a dozen speeders and impaired drivers were booked and arrested over a five-day span this week, as officers cracked down on reckless driving in the wake of the five-person fatal accident on July 15.

County wants Orchard case moved back here

Habersham County’s attorney is calling for a change of venue back to Habersham County as part of the lawsuit raised by The Orchard Property Owners regarding the potential placement of a radio tower in their neighborhood.

Investigation closed in attack on jail guard

The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office has concluded its investigation into the July 6 incident that led to the injury of Detention Officer Juan Balderas. At about 6:50 p.m. July 6, Detention Officer Justyn Standridge responded to a radio call for help from Balderas.

The City of Clarkesville’s Barrie Aycock currently holds the position of mayor and remains a symbol of the city as a figurehead and higher-ranking officeholder. She is the face that comes to mind when many locals are thinking of a mayor, but another mayor walked so Aycock could run.
