County awaits tax digest for budget decisions

Habersham County is waiting on the final tax digest numbers to see if a millage rate increase will be needed for the 2022-23 fiscal year. Normally, the tax digest information is in by now and the county commissioners are planning budget hearings.

DPH details rising danger of fentanyl

The Georgia Department of Public Health discussed increasing fentanyl overdose deaths, COVID rates, and a mysterious hepatitis outbreak among children at its May meeting. Fentanyl-involved overdose deaths in Georgia increased 218 percent from 2019 to 2021, said epidemiologist Dr. Laura Edison.

Grado spent more than five months in Habersham County’s animal shelter waiting for someone to give him a home, but his patience could pay off well in the end. The beloved Habersham County shelter dog who stole many hearts here before being flown to a rescue in Connecticut is now known as Wilson.

Mountainous start to summer

The Mountain Laurel Festival delivered everything it promised Saturday, as folks gathered for fun, treats and fellowship. The parade, sponsored by the Clarkesville Lions Club, kicked off the day with vehicles, creatures and princesses of all shapes and sizes.

ELECTION 2022: Results from Tuesday's primary

   Habersham County Commissioner Jimmy Tench was re-elected Tuesday night without a runoff, earning 55% of the vote against two challengers to win a second term. There are no Democrats running against him November.

Restored organ to make its debut May 22

   First Presbyterian Church of Clarkesville will be hosting a concert on Sunday, May 22, to celebrate the dedication of their pipe organ, which underwent a restoration in 2020 that went uncelebrated due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
