Piedmont swim teams thrive with community’s support

   Piedmont University’s men’s and women’s swim teams both claimed Independent South Swimming Conference championships earlier this month in Kingsport, Tenn.    The double titles mark an amazing feat for a program just four years into its existence.

‘Go with the wind’

   Ansley McAllister grew up in Clarkesville going to bluegrass jams and listening to Miranda Lambert CDs in the backseat of her mom’s car, but she never thought she could make music of her own. When she was 15 years old, she picked up a guitar and never looked back.

Landfill cuts off all C&D waste Thursday

   Habersham County Landfill will stop taking construction and demolition (C&D) waste after Thursday, per a policy change announced in January to help extend the life of the landfill.

Woodall to run in District 1

   Kelly Woodall announced Tuesday that he intends to qualify as a candidate for Habersham County Board of Commissioners for District 1.    That position is occupied by Commissioner Bruce Palmer, who along with Woodall could face multiple opponents for that seat over the next four years.

Diamond Raiders keep early roll going

   Habersham Central baseball hosted its Mayfield-Dover Memorial Diamond Day over the weekend at Raider Park. The annual event honors the lives of former HCHS coaches Shane Dover and Patrick Mayfield.

’Horns down as Raiders sweep Lanier off the pitch

   When the Lady Raiders fell behind by a goal in the early goings of Friday night’s home region matchup against Lanier, nobody panicked. At least not anybody representing Habersham on the pitch.

Irvin back on the mound as key piece for Piedmont

   Peyton Irvin means business. It’s just the way the Cornelia native and Habersham Central alum is wired. Always has been. Whether it be in the classroom or on the diamond, Irvin’s calm demeanor and level-headed approach have served him well thus far at Piedmont University.

Another Eagle flies high

   When Jaren Campbell was in first grade he came home from school one day with a flier for Cub Scouts.    “Mom, I want to do scouting,” he said excitedly.

Demorest hopes to put out personnel fires

   Demorest Fire Department has dealt with a large turnover of personnel in the last two months, but city officials hope to be on the path to rebuilding the roster and moving forward.    “We are getting in better shape every day,” City Manager Mark Musselwhite said.
