Trump, Biden dominate Habersham, Georgia primaries

   As expected, former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden dominated Habersham County’s presidential primaries. But the other race on the ballot was a squeaker, as former Alto Mayor P.J. Huggins edged challenger John Smith by one vote for the open council seat.

Ballfields get new infield mix with games starting Monday

   The Habersham County Aquatic Baseball and Softball fields, located on Paul Franklin Road behind the Ruby Fulbright Aquatic Center, are now more playable after the rain.    The fields recently received new infield mix to improve the playing surface and drainage.

Raider soccer teams stack region wins

   The Lady Raiders took down Apalachee 4-0 on the road Tuesday. Junior Paisley Cathey pulled off her second hat trick of the year to give Habersham more than enough scoreboard cushion to get the job done against the Lady Wildcats. Senior Addi Banks added a goal, too.

‘Get your house in order’

   In the wake of its Main Street program being downgraded earlier this month, Clarkesville City Council got an earful Monday from the city’s first Main Street Director, former Councilwoman Lane Gresham.

New faces enter the fray for GOP primary

   Four new challengers for county commission and school board seats came to light in the final 24 hours of qualifying last week.    Both four-year seats up on the Board of Education will be contested, along with all three Board of Commissioner races.

Longtime Mt. Airy historian honored by town council

   At the outset of Mt. Airy Town Council’s March 4 meeting, Mayor Ray McAllister gave the floor to Sue Payne Smith, who was recognized with Sue Payne Smith Day  on Feb. 10 to honor her “devotion and service” to the town.    The 90-year-old came to Mt.

Baldwin approves housing proposal

   Baldwin City Council unanimously approved the Baldwin Court Apartments variance ordinance, allowing for a single 10-unit building and an additional 33 parking spaces to be constructed on the property.

Raider soccer teams control own destiny

   The Habersham Central soccer teams were at North Forsyth (Cumming) Friday where the Lady Raiders won 3-2 to pick up another key region victory. The Raider boys fell by a narrow 1-0 margin.

Diamond Raiders stay hot, rough up Shiloh

   Habersham scored early and often in Saturday afternoon’s 6-0 win over Shiloh.    With the win, the Diamond Raiders improved to 10-1 and 3-0 in region play.    Sophomore Maverick Chitwood got the start against the Generals (4-7, 0-4 Region 8-6A) on the mound and did not disappoint.

Unbeaten Smith ‘gets the job done’ for Raiders

   There may be no better kept secret in Habersham athletics than Raider tennis standout Lije Smith. Then again, tennis – particularly at the high school level – isn’t traditionally a sport that draws a great deal of outside attention.
