Clarkesville’s genealogy room will remain open

   The legacy of Bill Raper will live on at the Clarkesville Library.    Raper, who dedicated more than three decades as volunteer there helping people across the country rediscover their roots through genealogy, passed away Jan. 30, leaving a large void at the library.

Lady Raiders’ young group falls, says goodbye to Barrett

   Habersham Central’s girls basketball team has reached the Sweet 16 in two of the last four years, but even though the Lady Raiders missed that mark this year, that did not diminish what Coach Bill Bradley called a “great” season.

Raiders fall short of ‘bigger goals’

   A promising Raider Hoops season came to a screeching halt Wednesday night as Habersham fell to Langston Hughes, 52-45, in the first round of the GHSA State Tournament.    The loss spells the end of one of Hab Central’s best basketball seasons on record.

Diamond Raiders power past Elbert, West Hall

   It’s been a busy week in Raider Baseball, but following an underwhelming performance last weekend, Habersham coach Chris Akridge thinks that may just be what his club needed in order to establish new momentum. He was right.

Home is where the hoop is

   Against all odds, the Habersham Central girls basketball squad worked its way through the 8-6A tournament ladder to secure a region runner-up finish. Doing so gave the Lady Raiders the right to host a GHSA State Tournament game in Mt. Airy this week.

Raider soccer teams 1-0 in region

   The Habersham Central girls soccer team hosted region foe Apalachee Friday night. The Lady Raiders got a head start on their male counterparts for region competition when they took down Gainesville on the road earlier in the week.

Piedmont gets off to rough start

   Piedmont University’s baseball team dropped its first three games during its opening weekend of the 2024 season. Piedmont lost 5-2 to Chapman on Friday evening in the opener. The Panthers recorded 11 hits to Piedmont’s four in the game while both teams committed one error.

Cornelia gives a hug or two to the trees

   The City of Cornelia celebrated Georgia Arbor Day on Feb. 16 by planting 13 trees on two vacant lots on the corner of Moss and Wells street.    “We need to preserve and protect our green space,” said Cornelia Mayor John Borrow. “Without having unchecked growth and sprawl in asphalt.

LOVE AND LIVESTOCK DURING FFA WEEK

Habersham Central FFA held its annual alumni livestock show on Saturday. Students showed goats, market hogs and cows for a shot at a blue ribbon and a banner, while also gaining invaluable knowledge in showmanship from the experienced judges.
